Is Your Actual Weakness a Lack of Honest Self-Assessment?

As Coach Craig once said – “Are you getting better or are you getting by”? I think that’s a good question to ponder for everyone reading this. CrossFit is a general physical preparedness program (GPP) and if you show up regularly and do the workouts with conviction there is no doubt you will get better – and by better I mean your work capacity will increase, which means you are more fit.

We all have different strengths, weaknesses and goals so there’s room for individualization and we encourage that here at CF316. However, I want you to consider why you are focused on what you are. Have you honestly assessed yourself across all 10 general physical skills? Maybe a cardiovascular endurance focus would benefit you more than adding 5 pounds to your back squat? Or perhaps you ankle flexibility has been the limiting factor in how well you can squat – are you addressing that?

If you have a weakness then let’s address it! Want to get a muscle up? I’ll give you extra work to help you get there. Want to improve endurance? Same thing – I will give you something specific for that. And yes, if you really think that your back squat is a weakness then I will give you something for that. But let’s not forget that GPP means what it says and I want you to challenge yourself to ask which of the 10 general skills are you truly lacking in because odds are if you start to address that then you will start to see everything else improve as well…
