Enjoy the Journey
I will fully admit to being a movie snob. Actually that makes it sound like I’m some kind of hipster spending his evenings pretending to understand the nuances of the beer I’m drinking and extolling the virtues of foreign films. I guess I’m just a hater. There are very few movies I will even bother to watch any more let alone enjoy. Books on the other hand are different.
I definitely enjoy reading – post-apocalyptic fiction, adventure, non-fiction, biographies, whatever. There seems to be an endless supply of entertaining books available but movies? Not so much. Only the movie industry could turn amazing books like “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” (127 Hours) and “The Road” into the dullest 2 hours of your life. Now I should point out that I do enjoy good TV shows, and probably because the story line actually has time to play out and everything isn’t jammed into a 2 hour block.
That’s how I feel about training too. It might seem great if you could reverse all the damage your sedentary lifestyle has created in just a couple months. Unfortunately that’s not how it works. It will take time to see the changes you want but if you stay the course they will certainly appear. Don’t just jump to the final goal – enjoy the process. Every PR, every pound lost (or gained) is a step worth celebrating.
Make sure you take time to celebrate the success of others as well. This isn’t a zero sum game and encouraging others will serve to motivate you even more. I’m lucky that I get to see these small steps from so many of you on a daily basis. It makes me better. It makes me feel better. Thank You
