Triathlon Results

Completed my first sprint triathlon yesterday and let’s just say there’s plenty of room for improvement. I was about 40 sec slower than I wanted in the pool, 2 min slower on the bike and 1 min slower on the run. I knew I would suck on the bike as I’m completely untrained there but I was surprised that my calves started cramping on the run.

I guess it goes without saying that I’m not really an endurance athlete – not even close. Having said that, I did finish 3rd in my age group and considering a few months ago I couldn’t swim more than 50m without nearly drowning I guess that ain’t too bad. I should rapidly improve on the bike just by riding more so the goal is to knock 1 full minute off my time before the next race in early December. And if they added some damn muscle ups to the race then I might be able to compete even better! Unfortunately I don’t see that happening.

The 1st place finisher was about 5 min ahead of me and that gap is going to be difficult to close especially since you have to assume that he’ll get faster as well. This experience has been a great reminder that you shouldn’t necessarily measure yourself against others. If you’re improving and having fun that’s all that really matters. There’s always going to be somebody faster and stronger than you. Focus on yourself and become the best you possible.

Big thanks to Mike Romero for talking me into this and being my training partner. Part of the CrossFit methodology is to “regularly try and play new sports” so here we are. Mike beat me by 30sec and that just won’t stand – it’s gonna be a battle all season…
